2017 Race Director Dave Richards
Our intrepid leader

In early 2012 my wife, Tanya Richard, approached me one day and said, "Let's do a triathlon this year?" Although posed as a question it was more of a statement..."I want to do a triathlon this year." I had been involved in various athletic activities all my life but had stopped any real exercise activities some 15 years prior. At the time, I was working in the restaurant industry and had obtained some very unhealthy habits. Smoking, eating too much unhealthy food and consuming an unhealthy level of alcohol, often. I was in no shape physically nor mentally to participate or even think about a triathlon as a means of fun.

The short story is that 5 weeks before the 2012 Ukiah Triathlon I was sitting on the shore of Lake Mendocino. I had just finished a miserable and exhausting open water swim with my wife, Tanya. Sitting on the shore gasping for oxygen my mind went back to my early days of running, basketball and health. I thought to myself, "I can do this, and I should do this." I immediately quit smoking, drinking any alcohol and eating for fun. I began to "train" my body to respond to what would be the most intense experience of my life. I lost 18 pounds in 2 weeks and was working out either running, cycling or swimming twice a day. Although I was healthy as a younger man and in fairly good shape I had never felt this good.

My wife and I did complete the triathlon and it was one of the most exciting events I have ever completed. Racing against no one, and competing simply to complete. I had reached a level of fitness that I had never thought possible for me at the age of 47. Now at the age of 51 (soon to be 52) my wife and I still run, cycle and swim. Competing in various triathlons within the California area, fitness is a way of life for me now. Currently training for my first Marathon and looking forward to various triathlons this year.

As a proud member of the South Ukiah Rotary Club I was asked to step in and assist this year as Race Director. I will be working directly under the guidance of Coach Tom Zimlich. Tom has been the race director for this event for the past 2 years and has brought us to the next level. Tom has been called to other areas and I am excited to work with our experienced and dedicated team. Our club has sponsored and hosted this event for the past 24 years. Our team of dedicated and experienced Rotary club members are proud to bring you our 25th Ukiah Triathlon.

Look forward to seeing you this year!!!!

2017 Assistant Race Director Lisa Davey-Bates

She's the best.

I was born in Chico, California, to Sandra Jones (Fox) and Val Hanchett on April 1, 1965. My parents were both college students at Chico State University. Shortly after I was born, my parents moved back to Lake County where they were both raised. My father came home to work at the family owned newspaper, the Clearlake Observer. My mother worked at Safeway to make ends meet. When I was two years old, my mother got a promotion and was transferred to Ukiah.

I attended grammar school, middle school and high school in Ukiah. I graduated in 1983. My favorite interest throughout junior high and high school was playing flute and piccolo in the band. As a member of the marching band I was able to meet some great friends and go to the Rose Bowl, Disneyland and Victoria British Columbia (to name a few). We also performed on the field during home football games.

My first job was at the Ukiah Daily Journal. I also worked at Beverly Fabrics at the age of 16. My senior year I went to work part-time at Betta Beverages, a beverage company now known as DBI Distributing. After graduation I was promoted to office manager for that company. When I was 22 years old I was hired by the State of California. I spent the next 13 years working to provide services and advocacy to people with developmental disabilities.

I was married in 1987 and my first daughter was born in 1988 and my second daughter was born in 1990. I earned my manicuring license early in the 1990’s as a second income. In the mid 1990’s I began taking general education classes at Mendocino College in Ukiah. In 1998 I began a two-year course with the University of San Francisco and earned my bachelor’s degree in Public Administration.

I began working for Dow & Associates as an Associate Transportation Planner in 2000. I spent the next several years learning about transportation planning, and in 2006 I became the Executive Director of the Lake Area Planning Council, the Regional Transportation Planning Agency in Lake County.

My husband, Perry Bates, and I took on the adventure of a life time and opened Redwood Empire RVs in Ukiah in May 2006. He works full-time at the dealership and I offer assistance from the slide lines.

My daughters are now 27 and 26 and both live in Ukiah. I had the pleasure of becoming a grandparent to my adorable granddaughter, Londyn Rose, in August 2012.

Chris Philbrick invited me to be a member of the South Ukiah Rotary in January 2013. I have enjoyed getting to know my fellow Rotarians and working on special projects such as Junior Achievement, and also on projects currently underway like the Honor Flight Program and the annual Triathlon!
